[I hope I translated from Australian to American correctly :-)]

The books I taught myself out of were:
"Awaken the Giant Within", Anthony Robbins. [Something like NLP,
but self-only]
"The Feeling Good Handbook", David Burns. [Cognitive Therapy]

Cognitive therapy is the long-term approach. It is based on the
demonstratable idea that most dysfunctional thinking falls into ten
classical mistakes. It isn't a quick fix, but eventually one learns to
generate less of these mistakes.

Note: Some of these errors have rather obvious inverses [swap polarity of
emotion]. David Burns doesn't mention these, since he is targeting mild
depression for his audience.

The ideas I extracted from Anthony Robbins are what I use for 'quick
fixes'. I don't quite have it down to the limits he describes.
I have found that any mild motivation can be created or destroyed in
about 30 minutes, using his techniques. The actual application takes
less than five minutes; the remaining 25 are to let the mind adapt to the
reprogramming. This won't alter your basic philosophy/religion, but it
can create some fairly fanatic motivations for lesser projects.

There are some Web resources on NLP and DHE two links from Anders
Transhuman Page. Something in the Individual category, and it's a
natural one. I have no personal expertise with those.
