We only need the last clause/sentence.

That is, this primitive trait has a rather 'irrational'
implementation--you deliberately put effort into what's going to destroy
the work you're trying to accomplish. It obviously analogizes to a
number of fields.
Most pre-mid 1980's translations are similar, unless they're deliberately
sectarian. I'm not willing to commit on translations from the late
1980's and beyond--there seems to be evidence of relative inconsistency
between these and the earlier ones. I haven't looked in-depth, though.
