There is a genetic-evolutionary component to altruism discussed
extensively by Dawkins in his books, having to do with gene-sharing. But
I would imagine most of those "religious memes" evolved memetically for
several reasons:
- desire by those in power to control the rest (e.g. hope)
- selfish meme propagation (e.g., faith)
- people noticed that their lives improved when they lived this way!
