This must be the same phenomenon that led to the concept of the Devil's
Advocate in medieval Christian debating circles. It would have gotten rather
dull at times with the clergy sitting around agreeing with one another.
Tom isn't the first person to create a flurry of activity with unpopular
sentiments (Who remembers Jeremiah Fern?). In each case the list has
benefitted ultimately from their presence.
The use of the phrase "Devil's Advocate" would be a little ambiguous given
the domain name that Virus calls home :-), but the concept is still valid
(just need a good name for it). Periodically someone could post an article
in this guise to challenge some of the unstated Virian premises.
