I want to thank KMO for his TOTD which included this fine quotation:
"Conscious faith is freedom. Emotional faith is
slavery. Mechanical faith is foolishness."
Conscious faith is phaith, as we have been using it. It is about purpose and identity.
Emotional faith is the kind of faith that Prof. Tim and I have been talking about -- that which makes people feel pain when their ideas (memes) are shown to be wrong. It is *slavery to ideas* -- you have made them your master my linking their fates to yours.
Mechanical faith is Dogmatism, the Virian Sin. It is static, boring, and ultimatly kills the intellect -- thus foolishness.
I therefore propose:
"Conscious phaith is freedom.
Emotional faith is slavery.
Dogmatic Faith is foolishness"
as a Virian Maxim (or whatever we end up calling them).
