virus: The Singularity

I have read the Vernor Vinge article on the singularity. However, I don't
find much more substantiation than there is for events like Armageddon
and "The Rapture". I do find his premises and speculations interesting
but I don't find enough hard evidence to convince me that it is
inevitable or even likely. My skepticism wins out. Maybe you might have
some helpful comments, David, since you have the background in computers
and in complexity.
